SAMAN DANCE

Saman (or the dance of a thousand hands) is one of the most popular dances in Indonesia. Its origin is from the Gayo ethnic group from Gayo Lues, Aceh province, Sumatera, and is normally performed to celebrate important occasions. The dance is characterized by its fast-paced rhythm and common harmony between dancers. These two elements are key figures of Saman, and are among the reasons Saman are widely known and practiced in Indonesia.

On November 24, 2011, UNESCO officially recognized Aceh’s traditional Saman dance as a In need of Urgent Safeguarding List.

SAMAN PLES

INDONESIA

Indonesia, officially the Republic of Indonesia, is a country in Southeast Asia, between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It is the world’s largest island country, with more than seventeen thousand islands, and at 1,904,569 square kilometres, the 14th largest by land area and 7th in the combined sea and land area.

Indonesia consists of hundreds of distinct native ethnic and linguistic groups, with the largest—and politically dominant—ethnic group being the Javanese. A shared identity has developed, defined by a national language, ethnic diversity, religious pluralism within a Muslim-majority population, and a history of colonialism and rebellion against it. Indonesia’s national motto, “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (“Unity in Diversity” literally, “many, yet one”), articulates the diversity that shapes the country.

INDONEZIJA

Razvio se zajednički identitet, definisan nacionalnim jezikom, etničkom raznolikošću, religioznim pluralizmom među muslimanskim većinskim stanovništvom, i historijom kolonijalizma i pobune protiv njega. Indonezijski nacionalni moto, “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (“Jedinstvo u raznovrsnosti” doslovno, “mnogo, ipak jedan”), artikulira raznovrsnost koja oblikuje zemlju.
