The Caucasian Chalk Circle is one of the last but also one of the most intriguing plays by Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956), the playwright of the different, the poet of the diverse, a story teller, director and theoretician who pioneered the epic theatre, that devil’s pacifist whose critical and socially-engaged work revolutionized the world of theatre. His fearless expression, the power of experiment and passionate engagement not only ensured him the title of Germany’s most prominent playwright of the 20th Century whose word still strongly resonates from theatre stages, mercilessly stating the truth about the world and time, but also an irrefutable influence on modern European drama.
Paolo Magelli was born in Prato, in the heart of Tuscany. He began his professional theatre career as an assistant to Giorgio Strehler. As a young director, together with Roberto Benigni and Pamela Villoresi, he founded the Teatro studio del Teatro Metastasio theatre company. He has directed more than 170 plays in theatres in Germany, Italy, Hungary, France, Venezuela, Mexico, Switzerland, Columbia, Belgium, Israel, Slovenia, Serbia, Macedonia, Monte Negro and Croatia.
This performance is a co-production of the Sarajevo National Theater and the MESS Festival.
